His father was looking for a way to improve his sons' performance in American football while they were at middle school, and started training them in Olympic lifts. General Interest

General
ART AND WEIGHTLIFTING
He is passionate about drawing and draws parallels between art and weightlifting. "A lot of [my] drawings come with this intense action frozen in time so it's a kind of sombre moment in that dynamic action. That's what I relate weightlifting to. There is a lot of strength, aggression, and power involved with weightlifting, but you have to be technically sound." (charlotteobserver.com, 19 May 2021; coastalvirginiamag.com, 01 Jul 2015; wavy.com, 08 Jul 2014)

INJURY SHAPES FUTURE
He believes the rehabilitation and adjustment to his training from 2009 to 2011 due to his back injury helped him to become a better lifter. "It was slow at first, but I went in much smarter, doing a lot of core work to strengthen my back. I think in a weird way my back injury helped define me and my more recent weightlifting success. I now realise how much I love the sport because at one point I lost the ability to compete and lift. I try not to take it for granted." (Athlete, 13 Nov 2014; reddit.com, 27 Sep 2014)
