General Interest

General
Spain qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games through the 2019 World Championships. They are making their third Olympic appearance at Tokyo 2020.

The Spanish team claimed silver on their Olympic debut at the 2012 Games. Victories in the knockout rounds in London over Great Britain and Hungary set up a final against the United States of America, a team that Spain had drawn 9-9 with in the group stage. This time, however, the US team were too strong and Spain had to settle for silver after an 8-5 defeat. At Rio 2016 they finished fifth following a quarterfinal loss to the Russian Federation and classification round wins over the People's Republic of China and Australia.

Spain claimed their sole world title in 2013 in Barcelona, where they beat Australia 8-6 in the final. They were runners-up at the two most recent editions of the tournament in 2017 and 2019, losing the final to the United States of America on both occasions.

Spain arrive in Tokyo as the reigning European champions, having secured a 13-12 victory over the Russian team in the final of the 2020 European Championship in Budapest.
