General Interest

General
The People's Republic of China booked their place in Tokyo by winning gold at the 2018 Asian Games. They are making their fourth Olympic appearance at the 2020 Games, with fifth-place finishes in 2008 and 2012 their highest ranking at the tournament.

At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, they lost all three group matches against Spain, Hungary, and the United States of America. In an eight-team tournament they still earned a quarterfinal berth, where they lost to eventual silver medallists Italy. In the classification round they lost again to Spain before victory over Brazil helped them to a seventh-place finish.

The Chinese women have competed at eight world championships, with a silver medal at the 2011 edition in Shanghai their only medal. In 2019 they recorded two losses and one victory in the group stage, before losing 12-8 to Greece in the play-off match for the quarterfinals. They suffered a penalty shoot-out defeat to Canada in their first classification match, and then ended the tournament with a 14-12 win over New Zealand in the 11th-place game.
