General
Montenegro arrive at Tokyo 2020 hoping to win their first Olympic medal, having come close at the last three editions of the Games. They have competed at each Olympic Games since 2008, and finished fourth every time. The team from neighbouring Serbia were responsible for denying them a medal in both 2008 and 2012, while Italy beat them to bronze in 2016. Montenegro won the chance to compete at the Olympic Games in Japan through the Olympic Qualification Tournament held in February 2021.

Montenegro have had considerable success, given their short history competing as an independent nation. They were runners-up at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona, and the team have four podium finishes at the European championship - winning the title in 2008, finishing second in 2012 and 2016, and placing third in 2020.
