General
The Australian men's water polo team have competed in 16 of the 18 Olympic tournaments since 1948. They failed to qualify for the 1996 Games and a dispute between local administrators meant they did not compete at the 1968 Games, despite qualifying for the tournament. They have a best finish of fifth, which they achieved in both 1984 and 1992.

In Rio de Janeiro in 2016, the Australian team recorded two wins and a draw from their five matches in the group stage, which was not enough for them to progress to the quarterfinals.

Australia were ranked sixth at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, which was their best world championship performance since finishing fourth in 1998. Australia placed third at the 2019 World League Super Final, equalling the team's previous best result at the event [third in 2007 and 2008].

In 2018, Australia recorded their best result at the World Cup. They lost to Hungary 10-4 in the tournament final to secure second place, bettering the third they achieved in 1993.
