General Interest

General
Venezuela secured their spot in Tokyo by winning the 2020 South American Olympic Qualification Tournament in Mostazal, Chile. Following a loss to Colombia in their second game of the round robin tournament, Venezuela had to wait for the result of the final game between Chile and Colombia to learn their fate. A Chilean victory meant that the three teams all finished the tournament with two wins from three, but Venezuela prevailed courtesy of a higher points count. Venezuela are one of three South American teams, alongside Brazil and Argentina, to qualify for Tokyo. It will be their second Olympic appearance, having first appeared at the 2008 Games where they were eliminated at the group stage with a lone victory over Japan.

At world level, Venezuela are regular competitors in the World League and world championships, but have never contested for a medal.

At continental level, the Venezuelans have won 22 medals at the South American championships, but never claimed gold. Their most recent podium finish came in 2017 when they lost in the final to Brazil. They have won a single medal at the Pan American Games, gold in 2003 when they defeated Cuba in the final.
