General Interest

General
Tunisia secured their spot in Tokyo by winning the 2020 African Olympic Qualification Tournament in Cairo, Egypt, where they were undefeated. Tokyo will be Tunisia's seventh Olympic appearance and first since London 2012, after they failed to qualify for Rio following defeat in the final of the 2016 African Olympic Qualification Tournament to Egypt. The Tunisians gained a measure of revenge upon Egypt by beating them 3-0 in the round robin format of the 2020 Olympic qualifier to finish ahead of their continental rivals in the final standings.

Tunisia have been unable to progress past the preliminary round at any edition of the Games since their Olympic debut in Munich in 1972, and have won just one Olympic match - a 3-2 victory over Egypt in the ninth-place match at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. At London 2012 they faced tough opposition including the Russian Federation and Brazil, who went on to take gold and silver, respectively, and claimed their only set in a 3-1 defeat to Serbia.

Tunisia have found it similarly difficult on the world stage. In nine world championship appearances since posting their first result of 22nd at the 1970 edition, they have progressed past the first round only once, in Japan in 2006. At the most recent edition in 2018, they failed to record a victory following losses to Cameroon, Russian Federation, Serbia, Australia and the United States of America. At the most recent World Cup in 2019 they finished 12th, with a record of one win in 11 matches. Their best World League finish is 27th in 2014, and as of 2021 they are yet to qualify for its replacement, the Nations League.

Tunisia have enjoyed more success at continental level, and are the reigning African champions. Following a 3-1 semifinal triumph over Egypt, they won the 2019 African Championship after coming from a set down to defeat Cameroon 3-2 in the final. It was their tenth overall and second consecutive continental title, following a win against rivals Egypt in the final of the 2017 edition.
