General
The United States of America were awarded a place in the first mixed team relay Olympic competition by way of their position among the top seven ranked teams in the world.

The US team arrives in Tokyo having finished second at the 2020 World Championships in Hamburg, where they were beaten to the title by France by eight seconds. They were victorious at the 2016 edition of the tournament, ahead of Australia and third-placed Germany, and also finished in the top three at the world championships in 2013, 2017 and 2018.

In 2019 they got a taste of the 2020 Olympic course at the World Series event in Tokyo, finishing third behind the British team and winners France.
