Italy qualified for Tokyo with a second-place finish at the Olympic qualification event in Lisbon, Portugal, in May 2021.

The Italian team are yet to make a world championship podium, and at the 2020 edition in Hamburg they placed 10th. Their highest ranking at the world championships is sixth, which they recorded in 2013. They have also not yet managed to secure a World Series medal, but came close at the 2019 race in Tokyo that doubled as an Olympic test event. They finished fourth, 26 seconds behind bronze medallists the United States of America and 62 seconds off winners France.

Italy have not been a major contender either at the European championships in recent years. However, they previously enjoyed success at continental level, winning gold at the 2014 European Championships in Kitzbuhel, Austria.
