General Interest

General
OLYMPIC MISFORTUNE
He was among the favourites for gold at the Olympic Games in 2016, 2012 and 2008. But a fractured arm meant he was unable to compete at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. He also suffered from a virus in the months leading up to the 2012 Games in London that affected his training preparations and sustained a minor fracture six weeks before the 2008 Games in Beijing which affected his performance in the People's Republic of China. He won silver in London and placed fourth in Beijing. (tokyo2020.org, 16 Jul 2020; lavozdegalicia.es, 25 Apr 2016)

HEART CONDITION
In December 1999 he was diagnosed with a cardiac anomaly and prohibited from competing in international competition for Spain by the Spanish High Council for Sports [CSD]. He recovered and regained his international licence in November 2003 but in 2005 the Spanish sporting authorities again revoked his licence. After more help from international cardiology specialists, he regained his licence again in February 2006. "I have overcome a lot of obstacles. Some people have helped me, others haven't, but I don't want wars with anyone. I didn't consider quitting. Once the cardiologists said I could run, I decided to fight." (javiergomeznoya.com, 07 Aug 2011; reuters.com, 25 Jun 2008)

FAMILY BACKGROUND
He was born in Basel, Switzerland as his parents were living there for professional reasons. The family returned to Spain in July 1983 when he was three months old. (javiergomeznoya.com, 07 Aug 2011)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
He is an enthusiast guitar player and has collaborated with Spanish rock band Malkeda in recording sessions and in concerts in Pontevedra, Spain. (mundodeportivo.com, 06 Aug 2020)
