He sustained heat stroke at the 2012 African Championships in Mauritius, which was also a qualifying event for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. "I didn't need a great result, I just needed to finish the race [to qualify for the 2012 Games]. And I was really prepared, I was in front in most of the races. Then I lost consciousness and woke up in the hospital." (sportnewsafrica.com, 20 Jun 2021; triathlon.org, 04 May 2021; The World Triathlon Podcast, 30 Apr 2021; trimag.fr, 18 Mar 2016)

"I started triathlon in Morocco with my father. First of all, I started the sport in Kenitra by practising the three sports separately. Then, I did my first triathlon at the age of 15 with my high school in Rabat. It was then that I decided to do it more seriously and had the thought of moving to France to do my medical studies and practise triathlon, which did not yet have a framework or federation in Morocco. So then I launched my career at Racing Club de France where I discovered the elite level of the sport." (sportnewsafrica.com, 20 Jun 2021)

RETIREMENT PLANS
He intends to retire after competing at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, having previously tried to qualify for the 2012 and 2016 Games. "As a Moroccan triathlete, it's very hard to have sponsorship and live with triathlon. And I'm a father and a doctor. I think it would be very hard to continue. It's destiny, you know? I missed the Olympic Games twice, so I've tried to learn from all the mistakes that I've made." (triathlon.org, 04 May 2021; The World Triathlon Podcast, 30 Apr 2021)

TRAINING PARTNER
In January 2021 he began training with Moroccan triathlete Badr Siwane. "This [speaking in 2021] was the first year that we really trained together for the final countdown [to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo] and, yeah, we had a really good time together. Obviously, I am disappointed for him [not qualifying for the 2020 Games]. We knew only one of us would be the lucky qualifier. I am sure he will be able to bounce back, because he is a very resourceful kid with a strong mind. I hope he is able to continue to progress and to get there in three years in Paris. I have great confidence in the evolution of Moroccan triathlon over the next few years and Badr will be part of the locomotives of the next generation."
