She took up tennis at age six in Liepaja, Latvia. She moved to Germany at age 14 to train at Nikola Pilic's tennis academy in Munich. (wtatennis.com, 2021; nytimes.com, 05 Sep 2018)

Her grandmother signed her up for tennis as she wanted her to get involved in a sport and had some friends who played tennis. Her first coach Edgars Ernestsons was also influential in her developing a love for the sport. "A great coach. It's so important to show the kids this love of tennis, and that's what we had, and so I loved it. Until age 14, I practised in the school gyms on the wood. Riga [Latvia] has some good facilities with indoor clay and hard courts, but I was always in Liepaja. Indoors on wood is a different style of play because it was so fast, and there were lots of bad bounces." (wtatennis.com, 2021; nytimes.com, 05 Sep 2018)
