She took her first tennis lesson at age three in Nieuwstadt, Netherlands, using a cut-off squash racket because a regular tennis racket was still too big for her. She later joined TC Born. ROLE MODEL
She says she wants to be a role model for young LGBTQ tennis fans. "When I was new on the pro circuit, I was shy because you don't know how people might think of you. They see someone wearing boys' clothes, and later find out that I have a girlfriend, so it made me wonder what they might be thinking of me. This is something that totally changed because now, they know who I am, what I do, what I have. They know that I'm polite to everyone, and they see that I'm no different from anyone else. I think that's something special about me, that I wear boys' clothes. I feel good in them, so I do it. It's something that makes me happy. I've had people writing me on Instagram, asking me how I got to be so comfortable with myself, or that they're happy to have seen me on the court, because I've inspired them to come out to their parents. I'm able to be a positive role model for them because of how I behave on court and treat other people. I think that's really nice to be able to support younger fans who may be going through the same things I did." (wtatennis.com, 26 Jun 2020)
