"I often stayed with my aunt and uncle, who were very active at the tennis club. They took me and my sisters to the tennis court, where I hit my first balls against a practice wall. A coach at the club saw me playing and asked if I wanted to join some lessons. I'm not sure whether he saw my talent, because I was only six years old. But he saw that I really liked the sport." RETIREMENT
In June 2021 she announced that she planned to retire at the end of the season. Part of the reason was that she was continuing to struggle with the effects of an Achilles tendon injury she suffered in 2020. "I have always demanded the maximum of myself, but the tank is quite empty. The balance of the hard work I put in day in and day out and the satisfaction I get out of it at the end of the day is no longer there. Also, I am more than ready for the chapter that comes next after this. When the COVID-19 pandemic came, I decided to give my body some rest as there were no competitions around the corner. I had no pain and enjoyed the fact that I didn't have to push myself all the time. But when I got back to training, the pain came back. After playing a few tournaments, I knew this wasn't the way I wanted to continue. During the pandemic and lockdown, I tasted a life without tennis. A life in which I don't have to push myself every day. I look forward to a life in which nothing is necessary, but in which everything is possible." (nu.nl, 22 Jun 2021; rtlnieuws.nl, 16 Jun 2021; knltb.nl, 16 Jun 2021; businessinsider.nl, 16 Jun 2021)

MENTAL COACH
She began working with a mental coach in 2017 after she began experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. "I was only thinking about the things that could go wrong. I really wanted to show what I can do and I couldn't accept it if things didn't go the way I wanted." (businessinsider.nl, 16 Jun 2021)
