"Very early on my parents discovered my passion for sports - especially those involving balls of any kind. Luckily, out of all the different sports involving a ball my mum decided to give tennis a go. I loved learning to play tennis and year on year I improved as a player. By the time I was 11 years old there was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to play tennis competitively." (anna-lena-friedsam.de, 25 Mar 2020)

INJURY SET-BACK
She missed a significant period of time due to shoulder problems that saw her have two operations between late 2016 and April 2018. She says she is aiming to regain the form she had before the first operation, which saw her reach the fourth round of the 2016 Australian Open. "I came back in [September] 2017 but only for four months, and then I had pain again. But after the first surgery I wanted to get back as soon as possible, I was so impatient to come back - but after the second one I knew how long it takes and I was more relaxed. I gave the shoulder time - and my mind, as well. I want to get back to that point where I was in 2016. Step by step, I know I can play that tennis but it needs time and consistency. This is my main goal. I never gave up, because the belief that I could do it again was always there. Now I just need matches week after week. Then I'll have a feel for the important moments again."
