ELBOW INJURY
The elbow injury he initially suffered in 2015 led him to consider retirement. He underwent surgery twice in 2016 and again in 2017, meaning he missed around 18 months of competition, and he was ranked outside the world's top 1800 players by February 2018. "When I made the [decision to undergo the] third surgery, I said to myself and to my wife, 'If this doesn't go well, I will retire. It's been too much time trying every month with the physios, with the doctors. It's not helping, it's not improving. So this is my last chance'." A new doctor suggested that the third operation would focus on a nerve in the elbow instead of a tendon. "I thought, 'Okay, this man is telling me something different, so I will at least try it and hopefully it goes well'. I was fortunate. I was lucky that everything went well." (rfet.es, 15 May 2021; atptour.com, 01 Sep 2019; elperiodico.com, 01 Sep 2019)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
In December 2020 he was elected to serve on the Association of Tennis Professionals [ATP] Player Council until June 2022. (atptour.com, 29 Dec 2020)
