RETIREMENT THOUGHTS
In 2016 she considered retiring from the sport after a series of injury setbacks left her ranked outside the top 500 on the WTA Tour. After she struggled with ongoing shoulder problems and an injured left knee injury that required two surgeries, she used her recovery period to study for a PhD in sports science at the National University of Physical Education and Sport in Bucharest, Romania. In 2017 she returned to competition while still suffering with knee pain, but would make her debut in the main draw of a Grand Slam at the US Open and reached 55 in the WTA Tour rankings. "[Reaching a high ranking] is something new that I always dreamed about since I was young. After all my injuries, it's really a dream come true to get a chance to be at this level and play high-level matches." (wtatennis.com, 19 Jul 2021, 15 Apr 2018; lastwordonsports.com, 24 Jun 2018)
