She began taekwondo at age 15 in Lugbe, Nigeria. She was introduced to the sport by coach Chika Chukwumerije. "He was training students at government secondary schools, and my school in Lugbe was among them." (assembly.malala.org, 06 Aug 2020; busybuddiesng.com, 24 Feb 2020; aclsports.com, 03 Jan 2020)

She had also taken up athletics around the same time as taekwondo, but she began to prefer taekwondo. "I started training regularly, combining athletics and taekwondo. Slowly I found out that I liked taekwondo more than athletics." She was also inspired by martial arts films. "I started thinking about sports when I was little, but I didn't think I'd be a taekwondo athlete. I didn't even know what taekwondo was. I liked action movies. Watching the movies now I am like, 'Wow, I know that move'." (assembly.malala.org, 06 Aug 2020; aclsports.com, 03 Jan 2020; olympicchannel.com, 12 May 2020)

BALANCING SPORT AND STUDIES
She says combining her statistics studies at the Federal University of Technology Owerri in Nigeria with her sporting career is a challenge. "My school schedule is very tight, and it is so hectic being a student-athlete. I do not want to lose so much school time that I would have to do an extra year, and this is why I cannot accept invitations to some tournaments, as they clash with important academic periods. Hopefully, when I am done in two years [speaking in 2020], I can have more international training camp experiences. Completing my education is important because athletes retire some day, and it is this kind of investment in education today that will increase the opportunities available to me in the future."
