He began the sport as a boy in Stuttgart, Germany, and started training under coach Vanja Babic at age seven. "My father took me to the TKD Center Stuttgart, where my brother was already training. My father didn't want me to hang out on the street that much. That's why I was more or less forced to do taekwondo." (dtu.de, 18 Dec 2019; taekwondo-canada.com, 01 Jan 2018)

"In my youth, I was not very good, and I lost many tournaments, so my father said to my coach [Babic], 'It's not a good idea to spend time on him'. But my coach said, 'Wait and see, he will get better'." (dtu.de, 18 Dec 2019; taekwondo-canada.com, 01 Jan 2018)

General Interest

General
TAEKWONDO COUPLE
He met his wife, Rabia Gulec, at a national training camp in 2010, and the pair were married in 2018. "There is a little bit of rivalry between us, because my wife won a bronze medal at the world championships in 2013 and took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and always said, 'I competed at the Olympic Games and you have not'. But when I won gold at the world championships in 2017, I gained the upper hand. And of course having qualified for Tokyo makes me very proud." (bachmannalexander.com, 10 Jan 2020; frankenfernsehen.tv, 21 Jan 2019; taekwondo-canada.com, 01 Jan 2018)

FAN OF NEW RULES
He welcomed the new scoring rules introduced in 2017, which increased the points scored from a kick to the body from one to two points. "For me, it is easier to kick to the body than to the head, and the new system is two points for body. And they made the new rules with the pushing, and I think for me it is very good, I like this style, it was not hard for me to change." (taekwondo-canada.com, 01 Jan 2018)
