She took up taekwondo at age seven. (jiayoowushu.com, 02 Aug 2020)
:
"My older brother had previously joined two years prior at a local taekwondo club in the basement of the town's middle school. My heart was set back then to be like Evan, my older brother, and so it took a lot of patience and growing up, as I was a ball of uncontrollable energy, until the instructor finally allowed me to join the class. My younger sister and nephew soon joined right after myself and later my other older brother and cousins all tried a class out too. This domino effect soon made our entire McPherson clan closer than ever." (jiayoowushu.com, 02 Aug 2020)

"A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it, it just blooms. Therefore, stop comparing, stop envying, stop putting yourself in a mindset of what society claims as to the norm, or what others are doing. Your story is yours for the taking however it may unravel." (jiayoowushu.com, 02 Aug 2020)

RETIREMENT PLAN
She intends to retire after the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "Because of my age - and although I am young at heart - my injuries are catching up to me. It's getting slower to recover than it was when I was younger. I do love taekwondo but I have other dreams and aspirations. This is the perfect time to transition out, settle down and have a family." When the Games were postponed until 2021 she delayed her retirement by a year. "Although I was considering retirement after the 27th of July [2020], the day of my Olympic debut [in 2012], to retire now when not fulfilling my goal of competing in my third Olympics is not up for reconsideration. I am fully committed to this Olympic cycle as the finish line is when I am on the Olympic stage fighting for the top of the podium." (mariyakoroleva.com, 03 Apr 2020; mdcthereporter.com, 07 Feb 2020)

RIO DISAPPOINTMENT
She had targeted a gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after winning bronze at the 2012 Games in London, but she lost in her opening round fight. "I had done everything possible to get the gold. I really truly thought that I was going to win it. At that moment you break because you dedicated and sacrificed, you know, four years worth of your life to this one moment, and I blew it on the very first fight." (mdcthereporter.com, 07 Feb 2020; kbhbradio.com, 30 Dec 2019)

MIAMI MOVE
After high school she made the decision to move from her childhood home in Sturgis, South Dakota, to Miami, FL, United States of America, to train ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. "I knew after high school that if I really wanted to pursue [Olympic taekwondo] I had to go somewhere else, and Miami was the place to go." (mdcthereporter.com, 07 Feb 2020; Facebook profile, 27 Nov 2020)
