General Interest

General
Hungary are making their Olympic debut in Tokyo, and were one of nine teams to secure a ticket to the Games via the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal.

The Hungarian team were once a major force at the world championships, finishing as runners-up six times between 1934 and 1954. However, after winning bronze in 1967, they would only add one more medal [bronze in 1987] through to 2018. In the 2000s they were a consistent top 10 team, but in recent years their performances have dipped. At the 2018 World Championships in Halmstad, Sweden, they finished ranked equal 14th, which was their lowest ever finish at the tournament at the time.

At the 2019 European Championships, Hungary were defeated by Portugal in the semifinals, which was the first time they had reached that stage of the tournament since 2011. The Hungarian team also lost out in the semifinals at the 2019 European Games to Romania, before being beaten by Poland in the bronze medal match. Their last continental title was at the European championships in 2007, which was their ninth triumph at the tournament since 1960.
