General Interest

General
Hong Kong, China are making their fourth Olympic appearance, and secured their ticket to Tokyo at the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal, where they were one of nine teams to qualify.

Hong Kong, China have exited the last two Olympic competitions at the quarterfinal stage. In Rio in 2016 they were eliminated by eventual silver medallists Germany 3-1 after beating Chinese Taipei in the first round, and four years earlier at London 2012 they lost in the last eight to the Republic of Korea. At the 2008 Games, they could not overcome the Chinese team in the semifinals before being defeated by Japan in the bronze medal play-offs.

On the world stage Hong Kong, China are regular podium contenders. In eight world championship appearances between 2004 and 2018 they progressed to the semifinals on six occasions, and disputed two finals in that time, which they lost on both occasions to the People's Republic of China in 2004 and 2006. At the 2018 World Championships they were beaten in the semifinals by the dominant Chinese team.

Continentally, Hong Kong, China compete in a strong field, but have still managed to claim Asian championship titles, most recently in 2005. Only twice in the 21st century have they failed to finish with a medal at the tournament, including a seventh-place finish at the 2019 edition. Hong Kong, China are yet to win gold at the Asian Games, however, with a silver medal in 1994 the closest they have come to top step on the podium. They were beaten semifinalists at the 2018 Asian Games, which was their best performance at the Games in 20 years.
