General Interest

General
The People's Republic of China are the reigning Olympic champions, a title they have held since the team event first appeared at the Games in 2008. They qualified for Tokyo after claiming victory at the 2019 Asian Championships.

The Chinese team marched to their third Olympic gold in Rio after a semifinal win against Singapore and victory over Germany in the final, maintaining their undefeated record in individual matches at the Olympic Games. Four years earlier, they beat Japan in the final in London, while on home soil at Beijing 2008 they defeated Singapore to win the first ever women's team Olympic gold medal.

The Chinese team's unprecedented dominance of the world championships goes back nearly 60 years. They won their first title in 1965, and at their next 24 appearances from 1971 to 2018 they won a further 20 gold medals and finished second on the other four occasions. At the 2018 World Championships in Halmstad, Sweden, they were victorious over Japan 3-1 in the final. Since a Unified Korea team claimed gold in 1991, the only team to interrupt the Chinese monopoly on the world title has been Singapore in 2010.

Unsurprisingly, the People's Republic of China are equally dominant at continental level. Their Asian championship final triumph in 2019 over Japan was their 12th title in 13 appearances since 1994. In 12 Asian Games appearances since 1974, they have won gold 10 times and silver twice.
