General Interest

General
Australia secured their spot in Tokyo by beating Fiji to the Oceania berth at the 2019 Olympic qualification event held on home soil in Melbourne.

Tokyo will be the Australian team's fourth Games after appearances in 2008, 2012 and 2016, and they are still looking for their first win on the Olympic stage. At the 2016 Games in Rio, they were eliminated by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea 3-0 in the first round. Four years earlier in London, they were knocked out in the opening round by Germany by the same score, while at Beijing 2008 they did not manage a victory against group opponents Japan, the Republic of Korea and Spain.

At world level, the Australian team have struggled to make their mark. At the 2018 World Championships in Halmstad, Sweden, they were unable to win any of their six matches and finished ranked equal 45th overall. In 14 world championship appearances from 1987 to 2018, they have finished with a highest ranking of 21st on three occasions.

Australia have enjoyed more success continentally, where they face limited competition. In 2018 they claimed their 10th consecutive Oceania championship title since 2000.
