The United States of America are making their second Olympic appearance after their debut in 2016. They punched their ticket to Tokyo by beating Canada to the North American berth at the Olympic qualification event in Rockford, Illinois, in 2019.

The US team are seeking their first Olympic match victory, as they were eliminated from the 2016 Games after a 3-0 first round defeat by Sweden.

After winning several world championship medals in the first half of the 20th century, including one world title in 1937, the US team have struggled to make an impact on the world stage in recent years. At the 2018 edition in Halmstad, Sweden, they finished with their highest overall ranking [33rd] at the tournament since 1997.

The US team have enjoyed more recent success at continental level. In 2019 they won their second Pan American Games title, beating Argentina to gold. It was their first medal at the Games since 2007. They were defeated by Brazil in the semifinals of the 2019 Pan American Championships, having finished as runners-up in 2018 behind Brazil.
