General Interest

General
Sweden are making their fourth appearance at the Olympic Games, having competed at all three editions to feature the team event since 2008. They secured a place in Tokyo via the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal.

At the 2016 Games the Swedish team defeated the United States of America 3-0 to reach the quarterfinals, where they were defeated by Republic of Korea. In 2012 they were knocked out by Germany in the first round, while at Beijing 2008 they failed to progress past the group stage.

Once a global powerhouse, Sweden's star has faded in the 21st century. As of 2018, Sweden still remain the only team since Hungary in 1979 to have disrupted the Chinese team's dominance at the world championships, claiming four titles between 1989 and 2000. But after taking home bronze in 2001, Sweden failed to win a medal at the next seven editions of the tournament. However, they showed signs of resurgence on home soil in 2018 when they reached the semifinals for the first time since 2004, where they were beaten by the all-conquering Chinese team.

At continental level, in recent years the Swedish team have hinted at a potential return to former glory. They claimed silver at the 2019 European Games after a 3-0 defeat in the final to Germany, and were beaten by Portugal in the semifinals at the 2019 European Championships. Sweden last won European championship gold in 2002, which was their 14th title at the tournament since 1964.
