General Interest

General
Hong Kong, China have competed at all three Olympic Games to feature the team event since it was introduced in 2008. They booked their ticket to Tokyo, along with eight other teams, at the 2020 World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Gondomar, Portugal.

At the 2016 Games in Rio they overcame Australia 3-0 in the first round, before being defeated 3-1 in the quarterfinals by eventual silver medallists Japan. Four years earlier in London they were beaten in the semifinals by the Republic of Korea, before losing to Germany in the bronze medal match. At the 2008 Games, they were eliminated from the bronze medal play-offs by the Republic of Korea.

After making the final four at the world championships in both 2006 and 2008, Hong Kong, China have been unable to return to the semifinals at the next five world championships. They were knocked out of the tournament by Japan in both 2016 [quarterfinals] and 2018 [round of 16].

In a highly competitive field, Hong Kong, China have struggled for medals at continental level in recent years. They ranked sixth at the 2019 Asian championships, while at the 2018 Asian Games they lost to the dominant Chinese team in the quarterfinals. They haven't claimed a medal at either tournament since bronze at the Asian championships in 2009.
