Australia are competing at their fourth Olympic Games following appearances in 2008, 2012 and 2016. They secured their spot at the 2020 Games by winning the 2019 Oceania Olympic Qualification Tournament on home soil.

Australia arrive in Tokyo still looking for a first match victory on the Olympic stage. In Rio in 2016 they were knocked out in the opening round after a 3-0 loss to Hong Kong, China, four years after losing by the same score at the same stage to Singapore at London 2012. At the 2008 Games in Beijing, the first to feature team events, they lost all three of their group matches to Austria, the host nation, and Greece.

The Australian team have also found it difficult to make an impact at world level. At the 2018 World Championships in Halmstad, Sweden, they entered the competition in the second division and did not win a match in the group stage, before being beaten by Luxembourg in the knockout round to finish ranked equal 45th alongside Canada.

At continental level, Australia have enjoyed success in a limited field where they often enter more than one team. They secured seven consecutive Oceania titles from 2006 to 2018. Australia have been eliminated from the Commonwealth Games in the quarterfinals at each of their five appearances.
