"Table tennis has helped me to know myself better. It has helped me to control myself, to stay focused on my goal and to never give up. If it was not for table tennis, I would never have felt all these emotions, I would never have met all these people, I would never have visited all these countries all around the world." SURPRISE OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION
He had intended to retire from international competition after the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco, but decided to play once more at the 2020 African Olympic qualifying tournament in Tunis, Tunisia, after being inspired by his Algerian teammates' men's doubles gold medal in Rabat. "It was the first gold medal for Algerian table tennis at the African Games and it gave [Algerian] table tennis much-needed recognition. The performance of my teammates convinced me to continue with the hope to doing something special for my country." He went on to secure one of the African qualifying spots for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "It has been a long time I have played for Algeria and I thought my final match would be at the Olympic qualifiers. I knew I was getting old and I needed to give the young players a chance. But after the way things panned out in Tunis, I got one of the tickets to Tokyo. I am still in shock because I never thought I could make it." (ittf.com, 07 Jun 2020, 18 Aug 2020)
