France secured their place in Tokyo by swimming one of the four fastest times in the qualification period among teams that did not qualify at the 2019 World Championships. They have competed at every Olympic Games since the event was first included in the programme in 1996.

The French team have won one Olympic medal, a bronze, which they claimed at the 2012 Games in London as the Australian and US teams took silver and gold, respectively. At the 2016 Games in Rio, they did not make the final for the first time since 2004, swimming the 10th-fastest time in the heats.

They won bronze at the world championships in 2007 and 2013 but have missed the two most recent editions of the tournament. In May 2021 they finished fourth at the European championships for the second consecutive edition, with their time of 7:59.45 booking their ticket to Tokyo. However, France have not managed to win a European championship medal in four appearances since their last podium finish [silver] in 2010.
