The Canadian women's 4x200m freestyle relay team hit a high point at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, as they won the NOC's first ever Olympic medal in the event. Their bronze, behind the dominant United States of America team and Australia, was one place better than their performance in 2012.

Demonstrating the team's development, Canada also won their first world championships medal in the event in 2019 as they took bronze in a time of 7:44.35, more than a second faster than their Olympic bronze medal-winning race in 2016, but 2.85s behind the victorious Australian team. The closest Canada came to winning a world championships medal before 2019 was two consecutive fourth-place results at the 1998 and 2001 editions.
