Brazil were awarded a place at the 2020 Olympic Games after Great Britain declined their qualification berth in the event. It will be Brazil's second consecutive Olympic Games and third overall having made their debut at the 2004 Games in Athens, where they made the final and ranked seventh.

On home soil at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian team swam the 11th-fastest time in the heats, which meant they missed out on the final.

In six world championship appearances since 1986, Brazil's best finish has been 10th, which they managed at both their two most recent appearances in 2013 and 2015. They have been more successful at continental level, winning six medals [three silver, three bronze] from six Pan American Games since 1999.
