The ROC 4x100m freestyle relay team's place at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo was secured through a ninth-place finish at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. Previously, the Russian Federation competed in the event at five Olympic Games from 1996 to 2016, during which time they made the final just once, in 1996, where they finished ranked last out of eight teams following disqualification. Prior to its dissolution, the Soviet Union took part in the event at six Olympic Games but never won a medal.

On the world championship stage, the Russian Federation have also qualified for the final just once, when they posted a best-ever result of sixth place in 2013. They missed out on a place in the final at the 2019 edition, finishing ninth in the heats by just under four tenths of a second behind Germany.
