General Interest

General
Silver medals in 1992 and 1996 are the People's Republic of China's best results in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay at the Olympic Games, finishing behind the United States of America on both occasions. They have missed the final just twice in eight Olympic appearances. One of those missed finals came in the most recent edition of the Games, in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, when they recorded a fifth-place finish in their heat.

The Chinese team set a world record to win a surprise gold in the event at the 1994 World Championships in Rome, but have not managed to win another medal in the 11 championships since. A fourth-place finish in 2011 in Shanghai represents their best result since 1994, but a sixth [2017] and a fifth [2019] at the past two world championships suggest they are trending in a positive direction.

At continental level the People's Republic of China won seven titles at the Asian Games between 1986 and 2014. At the 2018 Games in Indonesia, they had to settle for silver behind Japan.
