General Interest

General
At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Canadian team finished third behind runners-up the United States of America and winners Australia, to claim their first Olympic medal in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay since 1976, when they also won bronze.

The bronze medal performance in 2016 bucked a trend for Canada, who had been experiencing a slide down the rankings at each Games from 1984 onwards, culminating in an equal-worst finish of 11th at London in 2012.

Mirroring their Olympic trend, Canada have also won three bronze medals at the world championships. After claiming their first two medals in 1975 and 1978, they gradually dropped down the rankings until a lowest finish of 10th in 2007, before beginning a steady rise back towards the podium. After finishing fourth in 2017, they finally returned to the podium with bronze in 2019 behind the United States of America and winners Australia.

At the Pan American Games, the Canadians have typically finished behind their US neighbours, but on home soil they have managed to turn the tables to their advantage. At the 2015 Games in Toronto they set a Games record to take gold, 16 years after claiming gold on home soil at the 1999 Games in Winnipeg. They were unable to repeat the feat at the latest edition in Lima in 2019, however, where they finished third.
