General Interest

General
Japan's total of seven Olympic medals in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay is bettered only by the United States of America [24] and Australia [eight]. Japan were Olympic champions in back-to-back Games in 1932 and 1936, and won silver medals in 1928, 1952, and 1960.

However, in recent years their record in the event is modest. They only competed in the event at five editions of the Games between 1968 and 2016, reaching the final just twice in that time. But they did manage to win a medal on one of those occasions, claiming bronze at the most recent Games in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

The Japanese team's best result at the world championships is a fourth-place finish in 2009 in Rome, which remains the fastest time they have posted at an Olympic, world championship or Asian Games tournament. They placed fifth at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, but missed the final in 2019 in Gwangju and were ranked ninth overall.
