General Interest

General
At Rio 2016 Great Britain achieved their best result to date in the men's 4x100m medley relay at the Olympic Games, as they claimed silver behind the dominant US team in a national record time.

Great Britain finished seventh in the inaugural Olympic 4x100m medley relay in 1960, and despite sharing the record with Australia for appearances at the Games [15], they have only won two medals in the event. Before bringing home silver from Brazil in 2016, their only podium finish was bronze at the 1980 Games in Moscow. Their next best result is fourth, which they have achieved twice, in 1976 and in home water at London 2012.

They have qualified for the final at the last five Olympic Games after being disqualified in the heats at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. They finished last in both the 2000 and 2004 finals, before trending upwards towards the podium in 2008 [sixth] and 2012 [fourth].

At the 2017 World Championships, the British team ended a 39-year wait for a world championship medal in the event as they swam to silver behind the United States of America. Two years later they went one better, as they turned the tables on the US team to secure their first world title in a European record time.

Great Britain have been dominant at continental level in recent years, winning four consecutive titles at the European championships since 2014.
