General
The ROC 4x100m freestyle relay team secured a place at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo through a second-place finish at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. Previously, the Russian Federation competed in the event at six Olympic Games from 1996 to 2016, claiming silver at the 1996 Games in Atlanta and bronze at the 2012 Games in London. Prior to dissolution, the Soviet Union won three Olympic silver medals in the event.

At the world championships, only the US team with 16 have won more total medals than the Russian Federation's seven. The Russians are one of only three teams, alongside France and Australia, to have won world championship gold other than the United States of America. Their first, and to date only, gold medal came at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona. At the most recent edition in 2019, the Russian Federation claimed silver behind the US team.

The Russians claimed gold at the European championships in 2021, finishing more than a second ahead of silver medallists Great Britain.
