General Interest

General
Japan have competed in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay at the Olympic Games on five occasions since the event was introduced in 1964. The team's most recent appearance was in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, where they reached the final for the third time and finished eighth. Their fourth-place finish as hosts in 1964 remains their best result at the Olympic Games.

At the world championships, Japan's breakthrough came at the 2013 edition in Barcelona where they qualified for the final for the first time in six attempts. They took the last spot just 0.06s ahead of Belgium, then finished eighth in the final. Japan continued the trend at the next two editions of the tournament, finishing sixth in 2015 and fifth in 2017. However, they couldn't keep the momentum going at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju as they failed to make the final by one spot, finishing 0.26s slower than the last qualifiers Hungary to end the tournament ranked ninth overall.
