General Interest

General
The German team won bronze medals at Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 in the first two Olympic Games after the reunification of Germany. At the five editions of the Games since, Germany have made the final on three occasions but the closest they have come to another podium finish is fourth at Sydney 2000.

Germany missed the final at the 2008 Games in Beijing, and their qualifying mark was the slowest of the 15 teams that recorded a time. At London 2012 they turned that around, swimming 3:13.51 in the heat - almost four-and-a-half seconds faster than their time in Beijing - and went on to finish sixth in the final. At the most recent Games in Rio in 2016, Germany finished fifth in their heat and did not qualify for the final.

The German team have also claimed two medals at the world championships since reunification, winning silver in 1991 and bronze in 2001. Since then, however, they have not been genuine contenders for the podium. Their worst performances at the championships have come at the 2015 and 2019 editions, where they failed to make the final and were ranked 11th on both occasions.
