Great Britain made their Olympic debut in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the 1964 Games. The British team have qualified for the final in seven of their nine appearances at the Games but their best result remains a fourth place at the 1968 Games in Mexico City, where they finished almost four seconds behind Australia in third. They were ranked 12th as hosts at London 2012, and did not compete at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

It is a similar story at the world championships where Great Britain's strongest performance remains a fifth-place finish, which they achieved at the most recent edition of the tournament in 2019. After placing first in their heat in Gwangju, they posted their fastest time in the final of a world championships [3:11.81] but it was not enough to make the podium.

The British team swam even faster at the most recent edition of the European championships in 2021, clocking 3:11.56 to claim silver behind the Russian Federation. It was the fastest time a British men's 4x100m freestyle relay team had recorded in a final at a European or world championships, or an Olympic tournament.
