General Interest

General
LIVING APART FROM FAMILY
His wife Mandy and daughter Nora live in a house in Enschede, Netherlands, which is over 100km from where he is based in Eindhoven. They will live apart until at least after the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "We know what to expect from each other. We have what we want together and we are at peace with that. It's quite difficult to miss them a lot, but we are in touch by phone from Monday to Friday. When I am at home, I try to be there and give my full attention to my family. There have been times when I have wondered if I still wanted this situation. It just costs money. But I can still get everything out of swimming now. Fortunately my partner understands that too." (nos.nl, 04 Dec 2020; gelderlander.nl, 10 Jul 2019)

SUPERMARKET WORK
Up until 2020 he was working 20 hours a week in a supermarket in between training and competing. In 2020 he received extra funding from the Dutch government, which allowed him to cut down his hours to eight a week split between two shifts. He also said he enjoys the social aspect of working at the supermarket. "I don't earn that much as a swimmer, but now I can now work a bit less. It's also a good distraction and allows me to be around people. I want to keep doing that in the run-up to the [Tokyo 2020] Games." (nos.nl, 04 Dec 2020)
