She began swimming in 2006 in Braga, Portugal. (Athlete, 04 Aug 2016)

Her parents encouraged her to take up the sport so she could improve her health which was affected by breathing issues. "I began training and it was like fun, but I also practised dance and other activities. Swimming was not something serious but a hobby. I didn't understand why it was necessary to do all that effort, I didn't know why training had to be that painful." At age 13 she then got hooked by the competition. "It was my first international competition and I finished in first place. That motivated in such a fantastic way." (Athlete, 04 Aug 2016; maisfutebol.iol.pt, 26 Mar 2020)

STUDYING IN USA
She plans to work in paediatrics once her sporting career is over. She studied medicine for two years at the North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, United States of America, but decided to return to Portugal in 2019 to focus on her Olympic quest. "I had a 100% scholarship and didn't have to worry about anything, I just had to train and study. We are talking about the United States [swimming], the best in the world, and I really wanted to learn the most I could, either inside or outside the pool as well. I never stopped smiling because I knew that was a big opportunity. If I want to I could return because I still have two more years of my scholarship. Or I also could continue my studies in Portugal. [Being in the United States of America] was an experience that helped me finally to acknowledge me as a Portuguese. Having been so far away and having missed so much [country and family] made me realise that here is where I want to be." (maisfutebol.iol.pt, 26 Mar 2020; gopack.com, 01 Jun 2019)

FROM UKRAINE TO PORTUGAL
Born in Ukraine she and her family relocated to Portugal when she was three years old. "My parents came to Braga to work. And here is where I was raised. But I also was interested in the Ukrainian and Russian culture. The fact of knowing another culture gives me a wider vision. I learnt not to judge things from the beginning, but to analyse them from different perspectives. However I see myself completely as Portuguese." (maisfutebol.iol.pt, 26 Mar 2020)
