He initially followed his older sister to join a swim club. He then also practised judo, inline skating, skateboarding and mountain biking. As a teenager his parents demanded him to choose between studying and swimming. "My mother doesn't like swimming and my grandmother was even afraid of the water. I liked swimming, but I preferred to go to the freestyle park. I wasn't sure what and where I wanted to go. But I had a lot of energy and just tried a lot of things as I liked.'"
