He believes he has benefitted from his experience swimming and studying at Northwestern University in the United States of America. "Reconciling study and swimming is much easier in the United States because being inside the university itself, everything is much more organised and you have many more benefits as an athlete. In Italy, on the other hand, when I was in high school, the teachers knew that I was a swimmer and they almost tried to 'make me stop', to make me understand that swimming was not going anywhere. I have often been quizzed the day after a race, despite the fact that they knew about my sporting commitments. They targeted me precisely because I was swimming.
