He took up swimming in Japan when his family lived there between 2007 and 2010. (tv2.no, 12 Dec 2018)

At first he took lessons to learn to swim, but soon began training more seriously. "It was my first experience with swimming routine and proper swimming training. I just remember that there was a very good environment and atmosphere there. At that time, swimming was more for fun and play, but there was still a focus on swimming fast, and learning technical things and such." He realised he could be a professional swimmer as a teenager. "When I was about 11 or 12 I thought that I can actually do this. I can swim fast, and then I started to feel like performing well and testing my limits." (tv2.no, 12 Dec 2018)
