TIME TRIAL QUALIFICATION
At the 2021 US Olympic team trials he finished second in the 400m freestyle event which should have earned him a spot on the team, but his final time of 3:48.17 was slower than the Olympic qualifying standard of 3:46.78. "Obviously, I was pretty disappointed. All summer long, I've been training to go 3:44, 3:45, somewhere around there. Going 3:48 was not as good as I hoped." He was given a chance to meet the standard by swimming solo in the main pool in a time trial race at the trials. "I was super nervous in the staging area. Shaking almost. As soon as I walked out, I looked around. I made a point to look at everyone in the stands, to hear everyone cheering for me. That was an amazing feeling." He finished in 3:45.86 and secured his place on the Olympic team. "It's insane. I've wanted to be an Olympian since I was a kid. This is definitely a dream come true. I'm really grateful to get a second chance, to get a time trial." (olympics.nbcsports.com, 15 Jun 2021)
