CHANGING COACHES
After the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he parted with his long-time coach Zilvinas Ovsiukas and moved to train in Austria with German coach Dirk Lange. In 2019 he returned to Lithuania and began training with another Lithuanian coach, Paulius Andrijauskas. "I can't say that this was the worst decision of my life or that I ruined my career in Austria. Swimming is not an easy sport. Exercising too much doesn't mean you swim better. Zilvinas Ovsiukas paid a lot of attention to my technique, the athletes do not see how they swim, the coaches watch. Dirk did not do that, the most important thing for him is power and strength in the water. Paul works more on the technique, he understands it perfectly, he understands that feeling like a former swimmer, what we need, what the body position should look like. When I came to Paul to try and put together how we could work, we realised that this was a risky decision, so did the federation - there was a year left before the [2020] Olympics. But I think a good decision was made, maybe it should have been made earlier." (respublika.lt, 05 Jan 2021; lrt.lt, 06 May 2020)
