He began swimming at age four and started competing seriously around age 12. (sport360.com, 04 Dec 2013)
:
His parents insisted that he learned how to swim. "I started swimming at the age of four, simply because I had a fear of the water and pools. I'd literally start crying whenever I was around one. Because I'm from an island nation it was not acceptable so my parents forced me into it just as a safety concern at first. But ever since then I have loved the sport." (sport360.com, 04 Dec 2013)

MOVING AROUND
He was born in Malta, grew up and took up competitive swimming in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before going to the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States of America on a swimming scholarship. (cos.gatech.edu, 22 Jan 2016; sport360.com, 04 Dec 2013)

BENEFITS OF STUDYING IN AMERICA
He went to the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States of America and says the experiences he had racing there were important to shaping him as a competitor. "While I was still swimming in college, we'd have swim meets scheduled every two weeks, so you'd get used to racing non-stop whether you were rested or exhausted. The race-focused mentality really helped and it's great to see now that Malta is adopting this with more frequent time trials occurring throughout the season to give our swimmers the opportunity to race as much as possible". (lovinmalta.com, 10 Jul 2021)

SPORT IN MALTA
He believes more should be done to encourage the younger generation to take sports seriously in Malta. "I fully believe that one day Malta will win an Olympic medal. The big push needs to come in youth sports development and better balancing of the academic and athletic dynamic. We need to move away from the mentality of sports being a distraction from school and see it more as a tool for the development of important life skills." (lovinmalta.com, 10 Jul 2021)

EDUCATION AND OCCUPATION
He has a doctorate in physical therapy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in the United States of America. Since June 2020 he has worked as a clinic director and physical therapist at BenchMark Physical Therapy in Atlanta, GA, United States of America..
