His younger sister Tyler and younger brother Mikey are professional surfers. Tyler won back-to-back WSL World Tour titles in 2016 and 2017. In 2015 he suffered a severe concussion and a bleed on the brain in a wipeout while competing at Pipeline in Oahu, HI, United States of America. He made a full recovery but missed the 2016 season while recovering. He made his comeback in 2017. (worldsurfleague.com, 29 Aug 2019)

He began surfing at an early age off the coast of Culburra Beach, NSW, Australia. (ripcurl.com, 19 Mar 2017; worldsurfleague.com, 29 Aug 2019)

His father influenced all of his children to take up surfing. "One of my dad's parenting theories was 'Get them hooked on surfing and parenting will become easy'. He just loved surfing and so we all surfed. But I think everyone had it differently. My older brother surfed but went off and did something else. For me, I had this driving passion to surf, like every morning, before school, after school, and I asked my dad to help me learn some things." (The Lineup with Dave Prodan podcast, 23 Jun 2020)
